Bojangles

For dinner we got take-out—delicious fried chicken, biscuits, fries, “botato” rounds, Cajun pinto beans, coleslaw, and “legendary” unsweetened iced tea. It came in two giant “Happy Meal boxes” as Daisy called them.

Pools & Playground

Harry & Daisy enjoying the pool
Harry jumping in
Maggie asked to go to the playground (notice the big kite in the background!)
Steering the ship
Poppy picked up a wood chip and said, “Look! I found a treasure map!”
Following the treasure map!
Back to the kiddie pool!
Singing Baby Shark
Harry and Daisy tried the unheated pool beside the kiddie pool (they didn’t complain about the temperature—high of 27C here today)
The kiddie pool is only 1.5 feet deep. Maggie and Poppy love it.

I love a beach!

As we were leaving the beach this morning Poppy exclaimed, “I love a beach! Bye bye beach!”

You can see our building directly behind Harry (we’re on the 10th floor, on the left side)
Daisy dug herself a chair

Learning About Flight

The National Museum of the US Air Force had some fun hands-on exhibits.

Daisy enjoyed drawing an airplane
The air blowing upwards between the balls created low pressure and the higher pressure on the outside pushed them together.
Which shape of airplane gets pushed back the furthest in the wind tunnel?
They played with this for a long time, watching the airplane glide down the zip line and land on the runway.
Flying (or rather crashing) the space shuttle
Sitting in cockpits was fun!
Steering the helicopter
Landing the plane (her approach may have been a little too fast)

Flowers

I regret not taking photos of the gardens at the Cincinnati Zoo. They were beautiful! My favourite was the butterfly garden with plants that attract pollinators.

Galapagos tortoise

This photo doesn’t capture how big these really are and how slowly they walk, but it was neat to see! Especially since we just learned about them last year.

Kangaroos and Penguins

Another kangaroo walk-through exhibit similar to the one at the Ark Encounter
Blue penguins
They look bluer when they’re swimming underwater!

Birds, Monkeys and Insects

Poppy loves birds of all kinds. She said they were “so cute!”
This was another creature which Poppy deemed “so cute!”
Poppy was pretending to be a monkey
Pollinators: Daisy and Maggie enjoyed looking at all the dead butterflies on display (not the live ones in the hot humid butterfly room).
They had a really cool tunnel for ants that went all the way from one room to another. The ants were busy carrying leaf pieces from that plant in the display case back and forth.
They could see how many insects they weighed.

Riding the Carousel

The older three kids and I rode the carousel over and over while Poppy napped in her stroller. It was by far their favourite zoo attraction.

Manatees and Hippos

I loved watching the manatees AKA “sea cows” swim and eat their lettuce. They’re so adorable. A zoo guide chatted with our kids about them and let them touch a bone from a manatee skeleton.

Fiona is a famous hippo who was born prematurely but survived. The library has books about her. We got to see her cuddling with the other hippos. Another adorable underwater giant!

Look closely. There are 4 hippos cuddled up together.

Kangaroo Walkabout

We had to stay on the path and not touch the kangaroos unless they approached us. But we got pretty close!

Pushing Poppy

At the Canadian Museum of History in Gatineau, QC. It helped to know a bit of French here, but there were English translations for everything and all the staff members were bilingual.
